Small Containers of Enormous Power

I was out on our deck praying this morning. My view has now changed from a beautiful garden, to a sleeping and dead garden for the winter. I was thinking about how I might put a Christmas tree out there just to bring some life to it. As I was thinking about that, I flashed back to a childhood moment. It was after Christmas. Everyone would take their dying Christmas trees and put them out in the snow on the curb. The garbage company would make a special collection of those trees and dispose of them. We loved that time because we used to go out and light them. They were dried out pine trees and they would go up in fire in a roaring flash, burn for about three minutes, and then go out. It was a quick and intense fire and we’d run from tree to tree to get a bunch of them going at the same time. It never caused any damage (that we were aware of) and was a highlight of our Christmas season.

That thought reminded me of something I had just recently heard someone say. They were proclaiming that they might have a horrible medical condition – saying that just because of one symptom that had recently experienced. Not because they’d had this problem on going. Not because they had been to a doctor. Just because they’d experienced one symptom. It made me think; people have no idea that their words are containers of power. They are seeds that grow. They get lodged in the mind and heart. They can lead to other bad thoughts. Fear can take root, and the very thing they were carelessly proclaiming can be launched in their life. Think that sounds crazy? You know the story of Job. Listen to what Job said; “What I feared has come upon me; what I dreaded has happened to me.” (Job 3:25)

That might sound like an exaggeration to you, but maybe you need to learn more about words. Hebrews 11:3 says, “By faith we understand that the entire universe was formed at God’s command, that what WE NOW SEE DID NOT come from anything that can be seen.” What this is saying is that God’s words created the world we live in! What were His commands? You remember in Genesis – over and over we read, “God SAID, “Let there be… and there was…” Words spoken in faith by the Lord are what created and shaped our world. Mankind is careless with words but God is not. He knows the power of words. Words were His creation. Matthew 5:18 amplifies this point saying, “For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.” God’s law was His word and He said that His words would never pass away!

God teaches us in Proverbs 18:21 “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.

God teaches us that our tongue can bring healing or destroy. Proverbs 15:4 says, “The tongue that brings healing is a tree of life, but a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.” Do you see that power in the tongue?

Our words can create, shape, inspire, encourage, and bring healing. God desires to speak through us to bless others. (Like I pray that I am doing with you today!) We see that in 2 Samuel 23:2. “The Spirit of the Lord speaks through me; His words are upon my tongue.”

And God instructs us that part of His measurement for spiritual growth and maturity is based on our words. James 3:2 says,“We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man – complete in mental and moral character, and is able to keep his whole body in check.”
An old dried out Christmas tree can light up like a torch in a minute. Our words can torch a life bringing hurt and destruction or they can minister life and bring healing.

Be led by the Spirit of God as you choose your words. Pause and yield to His leading. Practice that continuously and you will have learned something extremely valuable from God that far to few do. It will bless you beyond belief but even more importantly, it will bless others! It will because your tongue will be a source of healing and life to others.

Isaiah 50:4 “The Sovereign Lord has given me an instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being taught.”
